THE QUEEN OF THE AEGEAN
DAZZLED BY THE GOLDEN RAYS OF THE SUN AND THE COBALT BLUE OF THE SEA, THE QUEEN OF THE AEGEAN, EMERGES FROM HER RUINS, FROM THE ONCE ERUPTED VOLCANO, STILL BREATHING ITS UNIQUE ENERGY UNDER THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH.

Destination Santorini

Did you know “Afroessa” is one of the prehistoric names of Santorini, meaning “the one that emerged in the foaming sea”? This is evidence of the fact that Santorini is the product of consequent volcanic eruptions. “Thira”, which is to date the official name of the island, was the name given by Spartan king Thiras who populated the island in the 12th century BC. Santorini is a nickname inherited by the Venetian sailors who roamed the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea in the years of the Crusaders and Pilgrims. They sailors made port at the southeastern cost of today’s village of Perissa, where there used to exist a small chapel dedicated to Saint Irene, which in Italian is pronounced “Santa-Iréne”, hence today’s nickname of Santorini.

Located at the south-most part of the island complex of the Cyclades, Santorini is located at the south-central part of the Aegean Sea, with the port of Piraeus and Athens being 128 nautical miles to the northwest and the vast island of Crete being 63 nautical miles to the south. This volcanic gem with an approximate size of 77 square km, promises to take your breath away with its wild volcanic beauty, coupled with the picturesque setting of the whitewashed houses perched on the edge of the world-famous Caldera of Santorini.
